First ASCOS post-expedition workshop

The first workkshop after the 2008 ASCOS expedition was held at Lund University 30 March to 3 April, just as spring started in southern Sweden. For many of us, it was the first time we met since the expedition last summer, and it was good to see so many friends again. Our hosts, Erik Swietlicki and Staffan Sjögren did an excellent job to make the 30-odd workshop participants feel welcome and together with the exciting science we see ahead, it made for a very nice week.

The first two days were spent in plenary presentation mode; the next two with working groups, first thematic and then interdisciplinary. The final days wrap-up made it clear we have a lot of hard work ahead but also that the potential scientific pay-off's will be worth the effort.

Next stop in the ASCOS planning is the arrival of the full and final databse; the deadline for this work is set at 1 September 2009.  

Please find attached the invitation and practical information related to the last pre-expedition workshop to be held onboard Oden in Landskrona, southern Sweden.

The third pre-campaign workshop was held in Stockholm at the "Norra Latin" conference center, September 19 to 21, 2007, in order to finalize the detailed logistics of the ASCOS-field experiment to be launched in the summer of 2008.

During the workshop the following items were up for discussion:

1. The status report on the development of new techniques, experimental methods
2. Instrumental limitations
3. Cruise track and waypoints, locations of vans onboard Oden, and other platforms (balloon/kite, ice floe and helicopter)
4. Ship support service (e.g. space and power) essential to the our program
5. Ways to minimize the research handicaps which are unavoidable on an icebreaker

Workshop participants: From the 3rd pre-campaign workshop.

The second pre-campaign workshop for ASCOS was held 8 – 10 December 2005 at Hotel KOM in Stockholm. This workshop started out as a final workshop for the Arctic Ocean Experiment 2001, with science presentations and discussions the first two days. Planning for ASCOS commenced the final day.

The first pre-campaign workshop for ASCOS was held 1 – 3 December 2004 at the Sfären Conference Center in Stockholm. The outcome from the workshop was an agreement to proceed with plans for ASCOS followed by the drafting of an Expression of Interest which was submitted to the International Polar Year (IPY) secretariat mid-January the flowing year.
